About Jan Shikshan Sansthan and Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Narendrapur

Considering the iconic role played by the Ashrama and contribution in the field of adult and continued education

sponsored by the then Department of Adult, Continuing Education and Extension of the Government of India, the Scheme of vocational education known as Shramik Vidyapeeth- a polyvalent adult education institute was sanctioned for operation by the Ashrama at the campus of Ramakrishna Mission Lokasiksha Parishad, Narendrapur in the year 1984. In the state of West Bengal, Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama was pioneer to set up Shramik Vidyapith. Initially there was a number of 14 trades for 88 batches. The Shramik Vidyapeeth was in operation till March 2000 primarily with the activities relating to functional literacy, vocational/technical training and improvement quality of life for mainly labouring classes and their dependents. In April 2000 the Shramik Vidyapeeth was renamed as Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) an Institute of People’s Education.

With abiding faith in Sri Ramakrishna-Vivekananda teachings that relate ‘service to suffering humanity’, the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Narendrapur has been running the Jan Shikshan Sansthan (Institution of People’s Education). It was considered as the Regional Centre of Eastern Region of India. Keeping in view of the specific provision contained in the Constitution of the Ramakrishna Mission, the Government of India approved vide letter No.F.5-1/99/D.III(AE) dated 04.08.2000 that the Jan Shikshan Sansthan, Narendrapur could continue to be a wing of Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama without separate registration as independent society.
